Discover 2 The Square

Tucked right on the corner of the historic market town, 2 The Square at 2a Rose Hill St, Conwy LL32 8HT, United Kingdom, feels like the kind of place you stumble upon once and then keep coming back to. I first visited on a blustery afternoon after walking along Conwy’s medieval walls, and the warmth that hit me as I stepped inside was immediate-both from the friendly staff and the comforting aroma drifting from the kitchen.

The location couldn’t be better. Being in the heart of Conwy means you’re just steps away from Conwy Castle and the bustling high street. Yet, despite the central spot, the diner has a relaxed, almost tucked-away vibe. Wooden tables, soft lighting, and the gentle hum of conversation create a cozy setting that suits everything from solo coffee breaks to family lunches.

The menu is where this place truly shines. It leans into classic British comfort food while adding thoughtful, modern touches. On my first visit, I ordered their Welsh rarebit, and it arrived bubbling hot, rich with mature cheddar and a hint of mustard. According to data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics, dining out remains one of the most popular leisure activities in Wales, and spots like this explain why-people crave food that feels both familiar and carefully prepared. The rarebit wasn’t just cheese on toast; it was layered, balanced, and clearly made with quality local produce.

I’ve since tried their full breakfast, which comes piled high with locally sourced sausages, crispy bacon, free-range eggs, grilled tomatoes, and hearty toast. The emphasis on local ingredients reflects a broader movement supported by organizations like the Soil Association, which advocates for sustainable and regional sourcing. You can taste the difference. The eggs are vibrant, the sausages flavorful without being greasy, and the portions generous without crossing into overwhelming territory.

One detail I always appreciate is how the staff explain the daily specials. On a recent visit, the server walked us through the homemade soup of the day-leek and potato-describing how it was simmered slowly that morning and finished with fresh cream. That simple explanation showed real pride in the cooking process. It’s not just about serving food; it’s about sharing how it’s made. Research from hospitality studies published by Cornell University often highlights how transparency in preparation builds trust with diners. Here, that trust feels genuine rather than forced.

Reviews from both locals and tourists consistently mention the friendly service. I’ve seen staff patiently recommend dishes to visitors who were unfamiliar with traditional Welsh options. One couple at the next table was guided toward the lamb cawl, a classic Welsh stew. They later told me it was the highlight of their trip. Moments like that turn a simple meal into a memorable experience.

Coffee lovers won’t be disappointed either. The diner serves smooth, well-balanced coffee that pairs perfectly with their homemade cakes. I once spent an afternoon there with my laptop, sampling a slice of Victoria sponge while watching the steady flow of customers. The cake was light, not overly sweet, and clearly baked on-site. You can tell when something is made fresh versus bought in, and this definitely falls into the former category.

From a practical standpoint, prices are fair for the quality and the prime Conwy location. Portions justify the cost, and there’s a noticeable consistency across visits. While I haven’t personally tried every dish on the menu, regulars I’ve spoken to swear by the seasonal specials, which change depending on available ingredients. That flexibility suggests a kitchen that adapts rather than relying on a static offering.

In a town filled with cafés and eateries, 2 The Square manages to stand out by combining thoughtful cooking, local sourcing, and attentive service. It’s the kind of diner where the menu feels curated, the staff feel invested, and the atmosphere invites you to linger just a little longer.

  • I had some time to kill, from getting off the train in Conwy, till Mayall's Guitar Shop opened, so I initially went in for a coffee, which eventually became a bacon sarnie and a fresh OJ as well. The service was impeccable. The food was well prepared. The ambience was spot on. I returned for lunch after shopping. The Ploughman's I had was very impressive (see attached image). Even though there were more customers, the service was still impeccable. I shall eat there again when I am next I'm Conwy

  • When you enter the place you don't exactly quite know what to expect from the menu. Interiors are a bit of a mish-mash of different styles and even the menu, albeit offering many items, was kind of difficult to navigate. It had hints of local, touristic and fusion. We settled on getting Welsh rarebit which was this tasty cheesy and sumptuous surprise - actually a traditional Welsh dish of melted cheese sauce on toast, often likened to cheese on toast. We also ordered jacket potatoes and the Specials of fried scampi and possibly the best chips we have ever had! Price was reasonable, service good as the two young ladies serving us were very nice although a bit hurried as there were several large parties having breakfast or lunch. All in all, quite a quaint place near Lancaster Square.

  • I visited Conwy for the weekend and stopped here for breakfast. I love the interior, plenty of seating, and quick service. The latte was super and the eggs Benedict was delicious. Would definitely recommend.

  • Genuinely lovely experience. The healthy start breakfast came with yogurt and perfect helpings of fruit, nuts, honey, preserves, and granola. It also came with a flute of fresh orange juice and toast. Tea comes in lovely little pots with proper cups. Staff was kind and friendly. For parents and people with disabilities, there’s a changing table in the bathroom, with little stools and a small kids potty, and there’s lots of grab bars and a call button as well. Truly lovely. Would come back.
